Newsweek
Publishes original  personal essays between 850-900 words in the  'My Turn' section. Essays may be about any topic but must not be written as a response to a story that has already appeared in the magazine.
Payment:  An annual essay contest awards $5000 to the first prize winner.  My Turn essays are paid but the amount is not mentioned on the website.

Marriage Partnership
A Christian website on marriage which solicits first-person narratives for their various departments. Unusually for essays, the website requests that writers query in the first instance.

Orion
Both novice and experienced writers are welcome here.  These magazine has lots of sections.  The best places, they say, for writers new to Orion to break into the magazine are S&M and the Groundswell feature well. Make sure to do your research so you submit to the write editor.
